This is a non-points UCA event (USAC upgrade points are available). The course is rolling terrain on the roads that many in the Ogden area use on a daily basis.

This very well could turn into a UCA points event for 2011.

State TT Info

There have been a couple of changes on the State TT.

First, the cat 5s were originally left off the flyer - they are now included. Sorry guys! This was just an oversight on the flyer, of course you have a race.

Second, the flyer originally stated that you can not race for a state championship in multiple categories. NOT TRUE. You CAN race for a state championship in both your USAC category and masters (for instance)... but you must sign up and race in BOTH time trials. In other words, you can not race in Cat 3, post a time, and then ask to have that time count for a masters state championship. Obviously, you would have to sign up and race in masters too, to post a result there.

There was a question about the masters B only doing 20K. This is because masters B is a Cat 4 and Cat 5 class. The shorter distance is to fill the requirement for a shorter distance for beginning (cat 5) riders.

Antelope Island Classic‏

I just wanted to go over a few things for next week’s Race, The Antelope Island Classic.

- We have two Cat 5 races; Cat 5A and Cat 5B. This is due to the USAC rule that we cannot have more than 50 cat riders in a cat 5 race. They are two completely separate races with separate prizes. You can sign up for either event. Just make sure that if you want to race with someone you know that they sign up for the same race.

- Timing chips will not be used. We will use high speed cameras.

- The registration, Parking, the Johnsonville Bratwurst Party, Results and the start of the race will be at the Marina at the West end of the Causeway as you enter the actual Island. You will need to tell the park ranger at the Causeway Toll Booth that you are a participant. They will only charge you $2.00 for your vehicle to access the causeway and the island. PLEASE CARPOOL.

- No cars are allowed at the finish line. The finish line and the marina are about two miles apart.

- There will be a feed zone for Cat 1/2 and Cat 3 only.

- Online registration will close on Thursday. If you plan on late registration on Saturday, please get their early. Late registration will close 30 minutes prior to the start of your race. There will also be a $10 late fee.

- We will not tolerate any public urination or littering. Violators will be fined and subject to State prosecution. It also jeopardizes the future of this event.

- The gate to cross the causeway will open at 6:30 am.

We hope to see all of you out. We have changed the race course somewhat from last year. The course description is listed on the flyer.

East Canyon

Just wanted to update the UCA
East Canyon Registration is still open.
Registration is open until this Saturday the 17th, 6pm.
You can register at Millcreek Cycles (formerly Canyon Bicycles of Salt Lake).
A valid USAC license is required at sign up. Cash or check only.
Rider limit is 300. We are currently at 135
We have increased field size limits for all of the Masters fields.
We will continue to adjust field limits according to participation in all categories

Team Registration Deadline

Hello:

Attached is the list of clubs registered with the UCA for 2010. (A link to the list is below.)

As you can see, there are quite a few clubs out there that have yet to register. We are setting a deadline of April 18 to join and still keep all of your team points. This is much later than last year, but up until now we had yet to set the deadline. Joining the UCA gives your club a voice in how the UCA is run and a vote. If your club is not a member of the UCA after April 18 your riders will show ad “unattached” without the club’s name on the results. Please help us out by getting your club president to get their membership renewed as soon as possible.

On another note, Saturday’s Hell of the North was another great race. Christian works hard and is very passionate to put on a great race and keep prices low. The results were posted quickly and were very accurate. I’d like to thank our great officials, Jon Gallagher (SBE) and Dirk Cowley (SBO) for doing an outstanding job with the results.

Don’t forget to sign up for the Tour of the Depot (www.tourofthedepot.com). It is always a great race with big fields and outstanding competition.

Apology to Cat 4 and 5 Riders‏

The U of U Bike for Kids was a huge success this last weekend. We had great turnouts on some very good courses. The support from the promoter and the community was awesome. Ridership was very high.

Unfortunately, we did not anticipate the number of last minute “day of” riders trying to sign up for the road race. The promoter did not have the cat 4 and cat 5 fields split and we did not have room on the schedule to split the fields. USAC requires that there are no more than 50 cat 5 riders in a field unless the field is a combined field. Then the limit goes to 75. I am sure that we had well over the 75 limit in the race. This was a huge liability, but due to the circumstances, we had no real way of knowing until the racers lined up for the start.

To complicate things even more, we had a lack of help at the registration table and there was no late fee for “day of” registration. That is why so many riders waited to see what the weather would be like before they decided to race. We apologize to those that were turned away.

There appears to be a great influx and interest in bicycle racing this year. We are very excited about that. We will coordinate with promoters and try to accommodate everyone by increasing the number of cat 5 races available at an event and work on registration issues. That being said, if you are a cat 4 or 5 racer and you want to race, I would highly consider pre-registering for the race and not waiting until the day of the race to try to register. This will save you the late fee and guarantee your participation.

Again, we are sorry for turning so many away, but we will work on ensuring that this will not happen again.

IMPORTANT UCA NEWS - READ THIS

UCA Members,

This is an important announcement from the UCA Board that affects everyone who races UCA events. Please read this carefully.

Good Evening:

As you know, last year we required chip timing for all UCA points races. Almost all of the races were timed using the Winning Time Chips. We had mixed results. Here is a list of some of the issues that we faced:

-          Renting Chips - very difficult to track and hard to take a deposit
-          Registration – almost impossible to process 10 to 30 people 30 minutes prior to the race and rent 10 chips at the same time.
-          Database issues – due to registration problems, we had incomplete databases which created incomplete results
-          Chip placement – if the chips were not placed correctly, they did not read.
-          Incorrect readings – we had a handful of chips that would read a few second earlier than they should.
-          Software issues with Winning Time, not SBO. The SBO software worked exactly as advertised.

There were also several advantages to the chips:

-          By the middle of the season, Cat 1/2 and 3 timing was almost always correct and very fast
-          Riders finishing way behind the pack were given a good score and an accurate score
-          When they worked, results were fast and accurate.

We tried to remember that the goal is for fast results with accurate times. Electronic timing will get us to this end, but we felt that changes were necessary.

After reviewing all options, we have come up with the following policy: All UCA Points Races must be electronically timed. This means that all points races must use chips or a professional camera specific for sports capture. It will be the promoters’ prerogative to determine what system he/she will use. For instance, for chip timing Mac at milliseconds.com or Jon Gallagher at Sports Base Events are available. For a professional camera, Jon Gallagher is also available. The prices for Sports Based Events to use a camera or chips will be approximately the same. The camera timing may be a little cheaper.

I know that this will mean that many of the races will not be using the Winning Time chip that many of you have purchased. This doesn’t mean that we will not return to chip timing in the future when we get all of the bugs worked out. But, until chip timing can solve the issues they currently struggle with, we feel that we need to offer other affordable options to the promoters.

The UCA will also supplement the salary of an individual who will help us with database upkeep and results uploading. This will be immensely important to keep our new website clean and updated.

Our hope is that everyone will be able to get accurate and fast results at every UCA event. We feel that this decision will be the best way to meet that goal. If you have any questions, please contact me or any other member of the UCA Board.

We are going to have another great season. I have never seen so much enthusiasm (by promoters especially) this early in the season. We appreciate all of you and your love for our sport.

2010 Bylaw Amendments

The annual UCA awards banquet will be held Thursday, October 22nd at the Airport Hampton Inn, 307 North Admiral Byrd Road. Please plan to attend, we will be awarding the top 3 riders in each UCA category, as well as the top UCA series team for 2009.

The UofU Criterium is currently a non UCA points race. However, they are trying to meet all the necessary requirements to become a UCA points race. They are very close and currently are waiting for permission from the UofU. If you know anyone with some ability to flex some muscle at the U give them a call. With the cancellation of Harvest Moon we could use some help to get one more UCA event. Stay tuned for more info.

For those of you that like the pain and suffering of climb after climb the Ithinkicanyons is an incredible ride. The IthinkIcanyons is a non-UCA event but it's for a great cause so I felt it is worth putting my neck on the line to mention it. Check out the web site for more info. Ithinkicanyons
