Dudes, Brothers, and Sisters...
The UCA meeting was awesome tonight. Tons of thanks to Todd for arranging that bad boy as I'm sure uber amounts of work were involved. After downing too many pieces of that ridicuosly good chocolate cake, I decided I best be riding big tomorrow.
That being said... Let's start a group ride in Sandy...
so here's the deal... Looking around the room at the awards ceremony, I realized I didn't know that many people. It has nothing to do with my lack of involvement in the community, it's just that I only get to know the guys I race with...And even that is limited.
I came from California where the group rides rule. In fact I hear that you can use your results form The Weekend rides for upgrade requests..(please don't take that seriously) We had 3-4 group rides during the week to choose from, and 2-3 infamous group rides to rock on the weekend. The amount of people I know just from riding my bike back home is staggering and lots of those guys are my really good friends.
What I'm suggesting is this... Let's set a ride and make it epic.. It should exist from the beginning of fall and go until spring... And on non racing weekends during the summer... I know cross season is going, but not everyone does cross and cross races aren't every weekend.
A group ride is a great place to learn better bike handling, better pack skills, learn the strengths and weaknesses of the guys you race against, meet people, and get some more good buddies. It's also a great place to build speed since you can ride so much faster in a group and it better simulates racing... Riding around solo with an ipod may be okay training but you will never be able to suffer as much as you could riding with a group. You can keep the winter weight off too which is always hard if you are a chocolate fanatic like me.
The other argument is that its time for rest and base miles.... Cool deal.. Come sit in the group and those of us who want to roll hard will tow everyone around free of charge... Or... Ride easy all week and then grab some intensity on the weekend. There is so much to gain by riding in large groups that it riddles my mind as to how Utah does not have a big group riding scene. If I'm missing something please fill me in.
Weather may be harsh but last I checked cycling is a harsh sport... Argue for your limitations and sure enough they are yours...
Everyone is welcome... That's the best part... cat 5's through seasoned bad asses, group riding has something for us all. Come spring everyone can get rowdy and we can get ready for season.
So basically from here on out, if the weather is "rideable" I will be at Canyon Bicycles in Draper off of 123rd south, ready to rock and roll at 10:00 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday. I consider just about everything but torrential downpours to be rideable. I want to get a course set for each day that doesn't change.. that's the nature of the best group rides. Perhaps come February we will make it longer but for now a 2 hour 40 mile loop is what we are going for. When we have that established, a different one for each day, I will post the route descriptions so you can hop into the group at any point.
I hope all you dudes, brothers, and sisters will get on the group riding thing. I'd be stoked to get to know all the cyclists out there and get some good rally sessions going...
