Non UCA status for races with dirt/gravel - Bountiful/Mazda

    1. Require all UCA point series races be on pavement and any race that repeatedly requires riders to ride on dirt or gravel roads will not count toward UCA points.

It seems someone's not a fan of a particular race.

To suggest it be completely excluded because you don't like it seems pretty weak.

Maybe have it be a 1.0 mag for all catagories.... but I see no problem with a little dirt where appropriate and think is should be treated as any other event.

Our sport was around long before there were an abundance of paved roads, and we have 100 times the technology they had 100 years ago to deal with the conditions.  Why not have one event where we test our metal against the conditions that the founders of our sport had to deal with day in and day out.

This would have limited impact on the points, a more substantiative rule would be to have non-UCA status for races likely to end in sprint finish.  Everytime there is sprint finish, I get whacked.  I think this is really unfair.

I am with D and Jeremy on this one.  It seems like a sour grapes against one race... I have never done well at Hell of the North but that doesnt mean it should be a non-points race... Wait a minute that is it!  All races that I do not get points at should not be counted in the UCA point series!

    This one is a winner!

Re: Non UCA status for races with dirt/gravel - Bountiful/Mazda

I'll take some cheese with that one.

If you don't like it don't race it.  If enough of you don't like it I have no problem taking it off the UCA calendar.  It would actually be less work that way.

Hell of the North is not a race that you should bring your thermokryptocarbonmoly aero wheels to.  It is not a race for everyone.  It is however cheap, even free if you're a junior.  I give awards to winners of every category and cash to I/II men and women.  I even invite returning I/II winners back to race for free (something I think every race should do).

Promoter of Hell of the North,

    Christian

Yeahhh!!  This is one of my favorite races of the year and I'd be all over it regardless of it's UCAness.

It should be earlier in the year though.  The chances of good weather are just too high in April.

PS- You can ride your thermokryptocarbonmoly aero wheels as long as you have the right ones!!

I think we should have more races like Hell of the North on the calendar.  This race is fantastic and I think this proposed new rule is silly.  Yes silly.

The Coalville Classic is a race that dirt/gravel roads could be added to.  I was thinking about that the other day and thought it might add some fun to an already very difficult race.

I'm with Ryan, Christian and Jeremy on this one.

Whatever you do don't pull Hell of the North.  This is the kind of race you love to hate!  Doing it once as a Cat5 and then as a Cat4 I'd think it would suck to not see it on the coming years calendar.  My first year I thought I learned some lessons and prepared well and then I came to it this year and someone had taken and put 4 inches of gravel on the dirt section and I was completely un-prepared.

Keep it coming and I hope next year maybe there's snow so I find yet another something that shows me I don' t know what the hell I'm doing.

    Later,

I totally agree w/RB.I think if this race was in march it would be way cool! make it harder, make it so getting a flat is the least of your worries.
sit in all day and wait for the sprint?
    no...go hard from the start

    I agree with Christian:

If you don't like it, don't do it.

Take me for example: I hate it! I don't do it. I don't complain that folks get UCA points for it, it just takes me a bit longer to catch up. Well, from here on out, I'll never catch up, but you catch my drift. Dirt sucks on skinny tires. I simply don't take part.

I personally have no problem with a race being UCA, as I think Utah should have 2 UCA races per weekend like New England (nebra) or Cali.

    Cheers from cold-ass vermont!

I also think we should make it harder - or at least dirtier. Perhaps the promoter can persuade a nearby farmer to position an irrigation line with water cannons spraying the dirt section so we can have some man made rain and mud. then we can all look like Bob Roll in his 7-11 kit at Paris-RoubaixStick out tongue

Any road race with an uphill over 1mile 3% or greater should not be a UCA event.

This is a true Utah classic. I agree with Ryan that it should be earlier to increase the chance of inclement weather. One of the best events in the state; hands down.
